Work to deal with a persistent moisture problem in the weight room at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre (CHRC) is still underway.
The District of Saanich says that as work continued to address the problem between the ceiling and the roof over the weight room that it became apparent that the roof assembly needed to be replaced.
That has significantly expanded the original scope of work and timeline.
The project work began in spring 2025 and will now continue into early 2026.
The work includes new flooring, lighting, paint and sprinkler systems as well as seismic performance upgrades.
New project scope:
This new scope required an extensive and detailed design process to ensure engineering design requirements are met, and to take into account modern code requirements and seismic improvements.
A complete roof replacement tender was issued and has since been awarded, with crews set to mobilize shortly, said the District of Saanich last week.
A temporary enclosure is also being built to protect the building from cold wet weather during winter construction.
The District of Saanich emphasizes that the weight room is “a highly valued community amenity”. Necessary structural improvements will also see aesthetic and functional updates.
Re-opening in 2026:
The previous projection of December 2025 being the re-opening date for the Gordon Head weight room facility has now been pushed into early 2026.
“Another update on will be provided in early 2026 as we look forward to reopening this highly valued community amenity,” said the District of Saanich in a November 25 news release.
This delay is only about the weight room. Programs at Gordon Head Recreation at 4100 Lambrick Way that use the aquatic areas, auditorium, dance studio, multipurpose room, and fitness annex facilities are not affected.
Other weight rooms:
Saanich’s three other weight rooms are open for use:
- Saanich Commonwealth Place
- Cedar Hill Recreation Centre
- G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre
