Yesterday NDP Leader Don Davies issued a statement as to why the NDP voted in favour of a budget amendment that was put forward by the Bloc Québécois.

This came after Thursday’s failed budget amendment as presented by the Conservatives.

“New Democrats share the concerns expressed by the Bloc in the motion voted on today,” said Davies.

“In particular, we want to see increased healthcare funding, better support for seniors and climate action. On that basis we supported the Motion,” the NDP leader said.

“We have not yet made a determination on how we will vote on the main budget on November 17. We continue to engage with working Canadians to assess the impact of the budget on their lives,” said Davies on November 7.

Davies said last month that the NDP would support a budget that invests in jobs, housing and health-care.

The NDP has just seven seats in the House of Commons but could make or break the budget vote as the Liberal government still needs two more votes to see their Budget 2025 bill pass.

Getting the budget passed:

On Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government survived its second confidence vote in two days after MPs voted down a Bloc amendment calling on the House to reject the Liberals’ budget.

A similar vote took place on Thursday evening which called for the House to reject the budget because it didn’t satisfy the Conservatives. The Liberals, Bloc and NDP all voted against that sub-amendment.

Ultimately, it’s unlikely the NDP will vote against the final budget bill as that could trigger a year-end federal election. The NDP is not well-financed for an election at this time and may not want to be seen as the party to bring down such a new government.

However, Carney probably still has other options to find two votes in favour of the Liberal budget including Green MP Elizabeth May and just one vote from any other MP (which could include yet another Conservative MP crossing the floor to the Liberals).

Budget votes are treated as confidence votes — if the vote fails, that results in an election being called.
