Backyard burning of yard and garden waste is not permitted in the District of Sooke until November.
The backyard burning allowable period in Sooke is November 1 to April 30.
While Sooke is a growing urban-style community on the western flank of Greater Victoria it is still largely supported and lived as a rural area by many residents.
The smoke from back yard fires can be troublesome for people who live in the area for its otherwise fresh oceanside forested air.
Burning guidelines:
As outlined at Sooke.ca/burning, the guidelines are:
- Burning is limited to yard and garden debris such as branches, leaves and prunings.
- No garbage, construction waste or prohibited materials.
- Permitted when the BC Venting Index for Southern Vancouver Island rates conditions as “Good”.
- Burn barrels/incinerators are not permitted.
