Early morning arson at house in View Royal

Arson occurred at a single-family home in View Royal is currently being investigated by West Shore RCMP.

Today January 7 at approximately 12:40 a.m. West Shore RCMP frontline officers responded to a report of a fire at a single-family home located at 328 Damon Drive in View Royal. That’s in the Atkins Road and Six Mile Road area near Island Highway.

When firefighters arrived the fire was fully involved on both floors. Reportedly an explosive accelerant was apparently thrown into the front of the house.

“As police officers arrived, View Royal Fire Department was already on scene putting out the fire”, says Cpl Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Office, West Shore RCMP.  

“The initial fire crew entered the house for search-and-rescue operations under heavy fire conditions,” View Royal Fire Chief Paul Hurst was quoted. “Thankfully all occupants escaped prior to our arrival.”

All occupants of the large two-storey home went out the back of the house.

The 5-bedroom 3-bath home sustained significant damage and police are investigating this fire as an arson.

Investigation:

West Shore RCMP Serious Crimes Unit is in charge of this investigation and will be working alongside View Royal Fire Department Fire investigators.

The investigation is in its very early stages and no further details will be shared at this time.

Though the fire was safely put out, it did pose a risk to public safety and police are advising the public in the area to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to police immediately.

Police are seeking the public’s assistance in this investigation and you will see officers canvassing the area for witnesses and video surveillance.
