Remembrance Day 2024 is being commemorated today in communities across Canada.
Elected and community leaders have contributed their thoughts:
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau:
“On Remembrance Day it is our tradition to pay tribute to those who have served. But it is also our obligation. A way of recognizing a debt that we can never fully repay,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in his Prime Minister’s statement on Remembrance Day 2024.
Premier David Eby:
“This sombre day is a reminder of the sacrifices of Canadians in two world wars and other conflicts around the globe. We also remember the price paid by families,” said BC Premier David Eby in his Premier’s Statement on Remembrance Day 2024.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh:
“Today we remember and honour the brave men and women who have given so much to protect our country, peace and freedom. Their dedicated service and sacrifice has made Canad the incredible country that it is today,” said NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in his 2024 Remembrance Day Statement.
Greater Victoria area:
Today there are Remembrance Day events across the south Vancouver Island region.
The provincial ceremony at the BC Legislature cenotaph is televised live.
Attending at the BC Parliament buildings ceremony: for the Premier, MLA-elect Grace Lore (Victoria-Beacon Hill) along with MLA-elect Nina Krieger (Victoria-Swan Lake) who both placed wreaths. City of Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto placed a wreath as did local Victoria MP Laurel Collins.
West shore:
Remembrance took place at the cenotaph in Colwood, attended by View Royal Councillor Damian Kowalewich and Colwood Councillor Dean Jantzen.
The annual Remembrance Day procession in Langford led to Veterans Memorial Park where the ceremony was held.
