Your 28-day voter’s guide for BC Election 2024

Happy Thanksgiving Monday! Elections BC voting station workers have the day off, though campaigns are probably steaming along without pause on many levels.

Advance voting continues tomorrow — Tuesday October 15, and on Wednesday October 16. On both days voting places are open 8 am to 8 pm. The full general election day is Saturday October 19 (8 am to 8 pm).

At this point the pre-election sense is that either the BC NDP or the BC Conservatives will form the next BC government, with BC Greens as again the third party in the legislature.

There are 93 electoral areas across BC (15 of those here on Vancouver Island). That means that at least 47 candidates from any party must win on October 19 in order to form a majority.

Vancouver Island:

Here on Vancouver Island it’s a temperate fall day. Streets and towns are quiet as people take a day off with family and friends or to gear up for the remaining four days of campaigning.

Advance voting places (for Oct 15 & 16) in the west shore are listed by Elections BC include:

  • Esquimalt-Colwood (voters in Esquimalt, Colwood, View Royal and VicWest): Colwood Church on Sooke Road
  • Juan de Fuca-Malahat (voters in Sooke, East Sooke, Otter Point, Metchosin, Cobble Hill, Mill Bay, Shawnigan, Shirley, Port Renfrew): Sooke Community Hall (Shields Rd in Sooke); and Metchosin Community Hall (on Happy Valley Road).
  • Langford-Highlands (voters in Langford and Highlands): Four Points Sheraton (on McCallum Road near Costco); and the Langford Legion (on Station Street).

Thankful in BC:

Despite the many challenges and difficulties in BC this year, there is also much to be thankful for. That includes — suitably for this article — that a substantial number of people care enough about this province to be candidates, run election campaigns, and vote.

It’s important to keep a democratic system running!
