Another opportunity for voters in Juan de Fuca-Malahat is coming up tonight, Monday October 7. [followup analysis to come]
Tonight’s all candidates debate/presentation will be held in the auditorium at Edward Milne Community School (EMCS), 6218 Sooke Road, Sooke. Starts at 7 pm and runs to 9 pm.
Topics are include traffic congestion on Highway 14, housing affordability and the cost of living, community economic development, health care, and climate action, emergency preparedness and wildfires.
The next MLA for Juan de Fuca-Malahat will be one of these candidates that Sooke-area voters will hear from tonight:
- Dana Lajeunesse (BC NDP)
- Marina Sapozhkinov (BC Conservative)
- David Evans (BC Green)
Attendance for these sorts of events is usually robust and the room fills up fast.
Some residents in the area are concerned about how their representation will change given new riding boundaries. It seems suddenly a riding that is spread far and wide, perhaps with Sooke at its core.
With a geographical footprint of 3,116 sq km, Juan de Fuca-Malahat is one of the largest ridings on Vancouver Island. The newly-boundaried riding encompasses a wide swath of the south to central island from west east, including from East Sooke to Port Renfrew to Cobble Hill, Metchosin, and many points in between including Sooke and Otter Point.
Organized by Sooke Chamber and Sooke Multi-Belief Initiative:
This all candidates meeting set the tone of informing potential voters, not hearing them clash or bicker. However, professional candidates know how to point out the flaws in another’s platform without being unfair.
Ideally, all events such as this are an opportunity for candidates to express their views, directions and intentions and be an opportunity to find out what the candidates’ positions are on key issues.
The Sooke Multi-Belief Initiative is led by local resident Koshin Sifu Moonfist. The executive director of the Sooke Region Chamber of Commerce is Deb Schenk.
Another meeting on Thanksgiving Sunday:
Another All Candidates Debate for the Juan de Fuca-Malahat candidates will be held on Sunday, October 13 at 12 noon at Kerry Park Arena, 1035 Shawnigan Lake Rd, in Mill Bay. Pose questions to the candidates; hosted by Mill Bay Community League.
See BC ELECTION CAMPAIGN CALENDAR for more details about various campaigns and ridings up to October 19.
