For the second year in a row, the capital city of British Columbia — Victoria — has been recognized with a Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Award.

In 2024, Victoria, BC has been named #1 Small City in the World, same as last year.

Destination Greater Victoria (DGV) was pleased to announce this today.

As a waterfront capital, Victoria came in ahead of San Sebastian, Spain; San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; Florence, Italy; and Salzburg, Austria.

“We are humbled and grateful to be recognized for a second time as the #1 Small City in the World by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler,” said Paul Nursey, CEO, DGV.

Contributing to this standing, more than 575,000 Conde Nast Traveler readers across the United States had submitted response ratings about their travel experience across the globe.

Victoria is seen as a “hub of creative innovation, sustainable living, and a unique blend of old-world charm and new-world experiences,” according to the travel magazine.

Business model:

DGV transformed its business model during 2020 and 2021, aiming to maximize recovery and success for their members, says Nursey.

A key aspect of that drive was to focus on earned media (news articles without an ad buy) especially in the US market, to set a global tone.

DGV has a focus on data as well. They can now claim that the average stay in Victoria has increased to 3.6 nights, up from 2.8 in 2023 and 2.3 in 2019.
