It’s been a year since Canada’s Premiers met in Victoria. Collectively, they are the Council of the Federation.

At that time the top concern was health-care. Over the past year some moderate success with additional health-care funding has been achieved by most of the provinces, much of it tied to providing data and results analysis, i.e. the money has come ‘with strings attached’. COF says health-care improvements are underway.

This year’s summer get-together by the Premiers of the provinces and territories will be held in Winnipeg, chaired by Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson.

While health-care is still a concern for most Canadians, this year’s conference is likely to shift to the housing crisis as the next area which requires some serious attention. The impact of inflation on provincial economies also seems like a fair bet for discussion. The impacts of immigration upon housing and health-care might be further area for discussion.

Representing BC will be Premier David Eby. Last year the Council of the Federation meeting in Victoria was hosted by then-premier John Horgan.

This will be the first COF meeting for Danielle Smith who was on recently elected as Alberta’s premier on May 29.
