In Burnaby today, one extremely lucky British Columbian is holding a ticket for a $40-million Lotto Max win.
Just one week after a Vancouver resident took home the largest Lotto Max prize ever won in Canada ($80 million), BC today has another Lotto Max winner in the Greater Vancouver area.
Someone bought a Lotto Max ticket in Burnaby for last night’s (May 23, 2025) draw and has matched all seven winning numbers to win the $40 million jackpot.
The seven winning numbers were: 13, 19, 23, 26, 36, 39, and 47.
The odds of winning a Lotto Max jackpot are 1 in 33,294,800 per $5 play.
52 weeks to claim:
All lottery prize winners have 52 weeks from the draw date printed on their ticket to come forward to claim their prize.
The specific retail location where the winning lottery ticket was purchased, and the lottery winners’ name(s) will be announced after the winner has come forward to claim their prize.
Year to date:
So far in 2025, B.C. lottery players redeemed more than $102 million in winnings from Lotto Max.
The largest lottery prize ever won in B.C. was a $80 million Lotto Max jackpot, won in May 2025.
Nation-wide game:
Lotto Max is a nationwide lottery game drawn on Tuesdays and Fridays after 7:30 p.m. (PT). Players can purchase tickets at any lottery retailer or at PlayNow.com. Winning numbers and group release forms can be found online at bclc.com.
Players can now check their lottery tickets anytime, anywhere on iOS and Android devices. Learn more about the BCLC Lotto! App here.
Gambling entertainment:
BCLC says that it offers socially responsible gambling entertainment while generating income to benefit all British Columbians.
They reminder people to play for fun, not to make money. For more information, visit GameSense.com.
Lottery dynamics:
These significant wins — and the drive for people to contribute millions each year to essentially pay for health and education and other key services in this province through the purchase of lottery tickets — is based on significant income inequity in this society.
When people have very little income to begin with they buy lottery tickets in the hope of changing their fortunes. Nowadays, many households can barely make ends meet. Small supports through lottery wins rather than big windfalls would make more sense in terms of helping more people.
If people have moderate income they often buy lottery tickets hoping at least for incremental gain in their financial security.
People who are financially secure may not be eager to buy lottery tickets except for frivolity, as the odds of winning are not great.
Life-changing:
Winning a massive amount like $80 million changes a person’s life forever.
It impacts family, friends, and career track — and not necessarily in positive ways.
It brings a whole new level of financial management and daily responsibility. Sometimes big-dollar winners end up wasting the lucky fortune while others distribute it to friends and family or invest in their communities.
Financial management is a skill set that can take time. Some large lottery winners will want to be careful to whom they entrust the management of their new wealth.
