The District of Sooke announced today that it will not be hosting a New Year’s Levee in 2020.

The annual event, traditionally hosted by the Mayor to welcome the new year, was organized for the past four terms by the late Councillor Brenda Parkinson.

“The new year is a time to look forward to all that we will accomplish in 2020, but it also presents an opportunity to reflect. The loss of Councillor Parkinson was devastating to Council, and the New Year’s Levee would not be the same without her,” says Mayor Maja Tait.

While the District’s municipal hall will be quiet on January 1, the Sooke Legion will host a levee event beginning at 11 am on New Year’s Day.

Originally a custom of the French royal family, levees are held in communities across Canada as occasions for community members to meet with local officials. The District of Sooke event has grown over the years to include performances from local music and arts groups while remaining true to tradition with speeches from local leaders and an opportunity for fellowship between neighbours.

“As Council takes time to spend the holidays with their family and friends, I encourage residents to hold their loved ones tight,” adds Mayor Tait.

“I wish to thank all the volunteers who made this event possible and extend my best wishes for a safe and prosperous 2020,” says Mayor Tait.
