Drivers are advised that work will begin on Saturdays starting February 1 on the project to widen Highway 1 to four lanes between the Leigh Road Interchange and West Shore Parkway.

Users of this section of Highway 1 can continue to expect intermittent delays of up to 20 minutes between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on weekdays. There will also now be delays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturdays through spring 2020.

“It is necessary to shift northbound traffic to one of the southbound lanes to allow crews to safely work on the northbound shoulder,” says the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in a release today.

“This means drivers can continue to expect single-lane traffic in each direction from 9 a.m. until close of work each weekday, and from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturdays. To facilitate rush hours, there will be no southbound stoppages until 9 a.m. and no northbound stoppages between 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays.”

Drivers are advised to use caution, follow the directions of traffic control personnel and obey the construction speed zone limit of 60 km/h when in place. For the most up-to-date highway travel information check: DriveBC.ca

When completed, Highway 1 between the Leigh Road interchange and the West Shore Parkway signal will be widened to four lanes with median barrier separation and improved roadside protections.

Last year in January and February 2019 there were two fatal crashes in that stretch of highway (January 8 and February 3) which precipitated the installation of temporary median barriers and prompted the widening project that starts in 2020.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure thanks drivers for their patience during construction of these important safety improvements.
