The swearing-in of Mark Carney as Canada’s 24th prime minister of Canada along with members of the Canadian Ministry will be sworn in at Rideau Hall on Friday March 14, 2025 at 11 am Eastern (8 am Pacific).
This announcement was made today by the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon.
That will end the nearly 10-year prime ministership of Justin Trudeau.
Smaller cabinet:
The cabinet is expected to be much smaller — about 15 to 20 ministers, compared to the 37-minister Trudeau cabinet. The new cabinet will reportedly focus on the tariff situation with the United States; likely the three ministers currently working on that (Dominic LeBlanc, Melanie Joly, and Francois-Phllippe Champagne) will be kept on in their current roles.
As a result of Carney setting up a new cabinet, a lot of ministers will be changing jobs or losing them entirely. Staffers will be vulnerable to release or promotion.
Possible election date:
The House of Commons is currently prorogued to March 24.
But it is widely expected that Carney will call an election this weekend or early next week. The election could be on April 28 or May 5.
Canadian federal elections can be of 37 to 51 days duration.
