About 1,000 people attended the 10th Annual Sooke Seedy Saturday showcase and sale over five hours at Sooke Community Hall today, February 23. It’s a seed supply and local food growing event that has gained popularity in the region, year by year.

There were people of all ages, families and kids — chatting, learning and acquiring good things for their gardens and food supply.

The event has been organized each year by the Sooke Food CHI organization, and in recent years has been a shared event with co-organizer Sooke Fall Fair.

Ellen Lewers of Sooke Fall Fair was pleased with the turnout, producing her cabbage rolls and perogies as well a vegetarian choice for lunch downstairs. Muffins were available for breakfast.

Booths around the hall upstairs included seeds for sale and a seed swap, and earthy things for sale like plants and preserves, soaps, and crafts made of natural elements.  Local wild harvesters were on hand.

There were educational displays, workshops and KidZone activities.

Sooke is evolving from at one time being entirely rural, to a semi-rural and bedroom-community town of now over 13,000 people. Sooke is beyond Langford by a 20-minute drive, and 35 to 40 minutes from downtown Victoria.

Sustainability and self-reliance are strong community traits in Sooke. The Sooke region for the scope of Sooke Food CHI includes the District of Sooke, Otter Point, East Sooke, Shirley and Port Renfrew areas.
